Large Scale are Meeting The Presser
Wed, Apr 23, 2014

This project aimed to find new ways for historical archives to be collected, stored and viewed in a bid to bring them off of the shelf and onto the screen in an interactive format. This was a research project involving collaboration with the University of Leicester’s History Department.
Steve’s beautifully shot film focused on the story of Martin Green, a Leicester based framework knitting enthusiast and perhaps one of the last active manufacturers of garments on these machines.

Woody Kitson of eKit developed the app to enable the viewer to either watch the film as a stand-alone piece or to extend their viewing experience by following the interactive prompts to further reading and information in the form of digitized archives such as photographs and sound recordings.

  • Martin Green continues to manufacture garments today from his home in Leicestershire
  • Martin steps up the pace on one of the machines at his home
  • The feet of a framework knitter work just as hard the hands and eyes
  • Each framework knitting machine took time to adjust to as they were individually made
