Large Scale Top 10 Films of 2012
Tue, Jan 1, 2013

The Large Scale top 10 films of 2012. Included for selection are all the films I have watched on a big screen in 2012. This will include films that were not necessarily released in 2012 – I just happened to watch them in 2012. The survey is less that scientific as I haven’t watched every single film released in the year, and there are some notable films, which for a variety of reasons, I didn’t get see on a big screen!

1.     Michael

The banal life of an Austrian pedophile. Perfectly pitched, considered and utterly chilling. Should Austrians be allowed cellars?

2.     The Artist

Silent crowd pleaser, but thoroughly entertaining nonetheless.

3.     Damsels in Distress

Whit Stillman is not everyone’s up of tea, but I haven’t laughed as much in a cinema for 5 years.

4.     Margin Call

What might the employees of a respected financial institution do to save the company?

5.     Interrupters

What can be done to curb inner city violence? Another exceptional documentary from Steve James.

6.     The Berberian Sound Studio

The impeccable Toby Jones as a naïve sound recordist working on an Italian Giallo schlocker.

7.     This Must Be The Place

The impossibility of finding what you are looking for.

8.     Rust and Bone

An unlikely romance between a whale trainer and a fighter

9.     Untouchable

Poignant French comedy, about a quadriplegic and his carer.

10.  The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls

Life affirming documentary about Kiwi lesbian twins.

Special Mentions

The Monk (Le Moine) – It is easy to be righteous when you live in an ivory tower…it is harder when real temptation comes to call.
